The Herman C. and Carrie W. Watson Memorial Scholarships
The Herman C. and Carrie W. Watson Memorial Scholarships were established in 1971 at the time of Mr. Watson's death. Mr. Watson was a local businessman who was the area's Texaco distributor in the 1940s and 1950s.
According to Mr. Watson's WIll, the scholarships are for worthy students who are from either Accomack or Northampton Counties, Virginia; who have applied for the scholarship before the closing date established by the college or university; and who are accepted by and attend one of the five colleges or universities listed in his will.
The term "worthy" does not denote financial need; therefore, any student from Accomack or Northampton County who is accepted by one of the designated colleges or universities would quality, regardless of his or her financial need.
Since 1971 over $5 million in scholarships have been awarded to deserving students from the Eastern Shore of Virginia
